Worldwide nearly 400 million people suffer from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), a chronic degenerative lung disease characterized by persistent respiratory symptoms and health deteriorating exacerbations. The exacerbations result in faster decline in lung function, poorer quality of life and increased mortality​

Patients diagnosed with COPD lack reliable and early diagnostics solutions to monitor their health. Once patients notice their symptoms it is often too late for early medical intervention. Consequently, 20% of COPD patients are hospitalized due to their exacerbation.

​BreathSense is an EIC Pathfinder project dedicated to developing a cutting-edge portable breathalyser with an innovative clinical workflow, that can provide real-time, non-invasive, at-home patient monitoring. This will allow for the early prediction of exacerbations in patients living with COPD, with the goal to transform COPD patient outcomes. BreathSense brings together a distinguished international consortium of renowned academic institutions, medical research organisations, technology experts and innovative SME’s to transform COPD patient care.
